Basin of Love 사랑의 대야

After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet.

이에 대야에 물을 담아 제자들의 발을 씻기시고 
요한복음 13:5



One day in physics class many years ago, our teacher asked us to tell him—without turning around—what color the back wall of the classroom was. None of us could answer, for we hadn’t noticed.

여러 해 전 어느 날 물리 시간에 선생님이 우리에게 물었습니다. 뒤돌아보지 말고 교실 뒷벽의 색깔이 무엇인지 말해 보라는 것이었습니다. 주의 깊게 본 사람이 없어서 아무도 대답을 못했습니다.

Sometimes we miss or overlook the “stuff” of life simply because we can’t take it all in. And sometimes we don’t see what’s been there all along.

우리는 때로 삶에서 “대수롭지 않은 것들”에 대해서는 그저 신경을 다 쓸 수가 없기 때문에 놓치거나 지나치고 맙니다. 그리고 때로는 늘 거기 있는 것인데 안 보는 경우도 있습니다.

It was like that for me as I recently read again the account of Jesus washing His disciples’ feet. The story is a familiar one, for it is often read during Passion Week. That our Savior and King would stoop to cleanse the feet of His disciples awes us. In Jesus’s day, even Jewish servants were spared this task because it was seen as beneath them.

얼마 전 그런 경우가 나에게 있었는데 예수님이 제자들의 발을 씻겨 주시는 이야기를 다시 읽을 때였습니다. 이 이야기는 고난 주간에 많이 읽혀서 친숙한 이야기입니다. 우리의 구주시며 왕이신 그 분이 제자들의 발을 씻어주기 위해 몸을 굽혔다는 것은 매우 놀라운 일입니다. 예수님 시대에는 유대인 종들에게도 이런 일은 할 일이 아니라고 여겨 시키지 않았습니다.

But what I hadn’t noticed before was that Jesus, who was both man and God, washed the feet of Judas. Even though He knew Judas would betray Him, as we see in John 13:11, Jesus still humbled Himself and washed Judas’s feet.

그러나 내가 그때까지 미처 알지 못했던 사실은 인간이며 하나님이신 예수님이 유다의 발을 씻어 주셨다는 것입니다. 요한복음 13장 11절에 보면 유다가 자기를 배반할 것을 아셨던 예수님은 그래도 자신을 낮추어 유다의 발을 씻어 주셨습니다.

Love poured out in a basin of water—love that He shared even with the one who would betray Him. As we ponder the events of this week leading up to the celebration of Jesus’s resurrection, may we too be given the gift of humility so that we can extend Jesus’s love to our friends and any enemies. 한 대야의 물에 사랑이 쏟아졌습니다. 자기를 배신할 사람에게까지 나누어주신 사랑입니다. 예수님의 부활을 기념하는 날에 이르는 이 주간의 사건들을 묵상하면서 우리도 겸손의 선물을 받아서 친구는 물론 적들에게도 예수님의 사랑을 베풀 수 있기를 원합니다.
