Fair Play 페어플레이

When Singaporean runner Ashley Liew found himself at the head of the pack during a marathon at the Southeast Asian Games, he knew something was wrong. He quickly realized that the lead runners had taken a wrong turn and were now behind. Ashley could have taken advantage of their mistake, but a strong sense of sportsmanship told him it would not be a genuine victory. He wanted to win because he was faster―not because those ahead of him had made a mistake. Acting on his convictions, he slowed down to let them catch up.

싱가포르 육상선수 애쉴리 리우는 동남아시안 게임의 마라톤 경기 도중에 자신이 선두로 달리고 있다는 것을 알고서는 뭔가 잘못되었다는 것을 감지했습니다. 그는 즉시 선두 그룹의 선수들이 반환점을 잘못 돌아서 뒤로 처진 것을 알게 되었습니다. 애쉴리는 그들의 실수를 이용할 수도 있었지만 그것은 진정한 승리가 아니라는 스포츠맨십 정신을 중히 여겼습니다. 그는 앞선 사람들의 실수 때문이 아니라 자신의 실력으로 이기고 싶었습니다. 그런 신념으로 그는 그들이 따라올 수 있도록 일부러 속도를 낮추었습니다.

In the end, Ashley lost the race and missed out on a medal. But he won the hearts of his countrymen―and an international award for his act of fair play. It spoke well of his faith as a Christian, and must have prompted some to ask, “What made him do that?”

결국 애쉴리는 경주에서 졌고 메달을 받지 못했습니다. 하지만 그는 자국민들의 마음을 얻었고 그의 공정한 경기로 인해 국제적인 상도 받았습니다. 이런 행동은 그리스도인으로서 그의 믿음을 잘 나타냈으며, 일부의 사람들에게는 “그가 왜 그렇게 했을까”라는 의문을 갖게 만들었습니다.

Ashley’s act challenges me to share my faith through my actions. Little acts of thoughtfulness, kindness, or forgiveness can glorify God. As Paul put it simply, “Show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned”(Titus 2:7–8).

애쉴리의 행동은 나로 하여금 내 행동을 통해 나의 믿음을 보이도록 도전하게 합니다. 사람들을 배려하거나 친절하게 대하거나 용서하는 작은 행동들이 하나님을 영화롭게 할 수 있습니다. 바울은 이것을 간략하게 이렇게 기록했습니다. “범사에 네 자신이 선한 일의 본을 보이며 교훈에 부패하지 아니함과 단정함과 책망할 것이 없는 바른 말을 하게 하라”(딛 2:7-8).

Our positive actions toward others can show the world that we are able to live differently because of the Holy Spirit’s work in us. He will give us the grace to reject ungodliness and wrong passions, and to live upright lives that point people to God(vv. 11–12). [Leslie Koh]

다른 이들에게 바람직한 행동을 함으로써 우리는 성령께서 우리 안에 역사하시기에 우리가 구별된 삶을 살 수 있다는 것을 세상에 보여줄 수 있습니다. 성령님은 우리가 경건치 못한 것과 그릇된 열정을 거부하고, 사람들을 하나님께로 인도하는 올바른 삶을 살 수 있도록 은혜를 주실 것입니다(11-12절).
