Love Passed Down 내리 사랑

디모데후서에서 바울은 디모데를 생각하면 그의 할머니와 어머니에게 있었던 “신실한 믿음”이 생각난다고 썼습니다. 나는 딸이 탐정소설을 좋아하는 것과 함께, 할머니 할아버지가 했던 것처럼 “섬기고” 기도하며 “예수 그리스도 안에 있는 생명의 약속”(디모데후서 1:1)을 붙잡는 믿음을 물려받기를 소원합니다.

나는 또 예수님을 아는 부모나 조부모가 없는 사람들에게도 희망이 있다고 생각합니다. 디모데의 아버지에 대해서는 아무런 언급이 없지만 바울은 디모데를 자신의 “사랑하는 아들”이라고 부릅니다(2절). 믿음을 전해줄 가족이 없는 사람들에게도 교회 안에는 부모와 조부모가 될 분들이 있습니다. 이들이 어떻게 “거룩한 삶”(9절)을 살 것인지, 하나님이 우리에게 주신 은사, 곧 “능력과 사랑과 절제하는 마음”(7절)을 어떻게 사용할 것인지를 알도록 도와줄 것입니다. 진실로 우리 모두는 아름다운 유산을 가지고 있습니다.

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul wrote that when he thought of Timothy, he was reminded of the “sincere faith” that lived in Timothy’s grandmother and mother. I hope that along with her love of mysteries, my daughter is also inheriting faith—that she will “serve” as her grandparents have, that she will pray, and that she will hold on “to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 1:1).

I also see hope here for those who don’t have parents or grandparents who know Jesus. Though Timothy’s father isn’t mentioned, Paul calls Timothy his “dear son” ( v. 2). Those who don’t have families to pass down faith can still find parents and grandparents in the church—people who will help us figure out how to live a “holy life” ( v. 9), and to embrace the gifts God has given us of “power, love and self-discipline”( v. 7). Heavenly Father, thank You for saving me by grace through faith in Jesus. Help me to pass down to the next generation the gifts I’ve received and the truth of the gospel.
