인생길에는 굴복의 길과 극복의 길이 있다. 고독에 굴복하면 불안이 끊이지 않지만 고독을 극복하면 힘든 짐도 질 수 있는 튼튼한 어깨가 생긴다. 실패에 굴복하면 탈진과 염려에 젖어들지만 실패를 극복하면 어제의 실패가 오늘의 승리로 변화된다. 고난에 굴복하면 천 길 낭떠러지로 떨어지지만 고난을 극복하면 하나님의 크신 은혜를 체험한다. 아무리 생각해도 극복의 길이 굴복의 길보다 낫다.  무수한 사건을 통해 굴복의 길과 극복의 길 중 하나를 선택해야 할 때 극복의 길을 선택하라. 어떤 사람은 극복의 길이 좋은 줄 알면서도 의지가 부족해 굴복의 길을 택한다. 어떤 사람은 이번에는 굴복의 길을 가지만 다음번에는 극복의 길을 가겠다고 미룬다. 오늘의 굴복은 내일의 굴복을 낳다가 끊임없는 굴복을 낳고 오늘의 극복은 내일의 극복을 낳다가 끊임없는 극복을 낳기에 지금 당장 무조건적인 극복의 길로 들어서라.  어떤 사람은 굴복의 길로 가는 자기를 변호하려고 이렇게 말한다. “내가 얼마나 어려운 줄 아십니까? 얼마나 오래 기다린 줄 아십니까? 얼마나 연단을 받았는지 아십니까?” 그러나 찬찬히 생각해 보라. 우리가 어려움을 당한다고 해도 앞서간 신앙 선배들처럼 어려움을 당했는가? 우리가 오랜 세월을 기다렸다지만 앞서간 성경 인물들처럼 오래 기다렸는가? 많은 믿음의 선진들이 우리가 당하는 것 이상의 고난을 통과하면서 위대한 일을 성취했다.  내가 지금 고난을 당한다지만 남들도 지금 비슷한 고난을 당하고 있다. 고난이란 위대한 선생은 유감스럽게도 내게만 찾아오지 않는다. 내 고난이 남의 고난보다 클 것이라는 생각에만 빠져들지 말고 내 고난은 많은 사람들이 이제까지 그랬던 것처럼 충분히 극복될 수 있음을 깨달고 당장 고난을 극복하는 길로 나서서 용기 있게 그 길을 걸어가라. 위대한 인물은 위대한 실천에서 생기고 위대한 실천은 위대한 생각에서 온다.  위대한 생각은 어디서 생기는가? 많은 고통의 나날로 기경된 마음의 터전에서 생긴다. 고통이 위대한 인물을 만든다. 베토벤이

We aren’t sure who wrote Psalm 104, but the psalmist was certainly captivated by nature’s beauty. After describing many of creation’s wonders, like the cedars of Lebanon and the wild donkeys, he sings, “May the Lord rejoice in his works”(v. 31). Then he prays, “May my meditation be pleasing to him”(v. 34). Nature has plenty of things that can remain in the eye because of their beauty and perfection. How can we meditate on them and please God? We can observe, rejoice, and thank God as we contemplate His works and recapture the wonder. Proverbs 15:13 says, “A happy heart makes the face cheerful, but heartache crushes the spirit.” Is the writer directing us to cheery grins in the face of every interruption, disappointment, and inconvenience life brings? Surely not! There are times for genuine mourning, despair, and even anger at injustice. But in our everyday moments, a smile can offer relief, hope, and the grace needed to continue. Perhaps the point of the proverb is that a smile naturally results from the condition of our inner beings. A “happy heart” is at peace, content, and yielded to God’s best. With such a heart, happy from the inside out, we can respond to surprising circumstances with a genuine smile, inviting others to embrace the hope and peace they too can experience with God. [이미지출처: 김용성 성화 갤러리 "빛으로" ] ■ 예수님을 붙들라  구원의 축복에는 영혼 구원 외에 수많은 실제적인 축복도 포함하고 있다. 구원에는 ‘전인적인 치유의 축복’도 포함되어 있고(5-6절), ‘만물의 회복의 축복’도 포함되어 있다(7절). 구원받은 사람은 자연주의자가 되지는 않아도 자연을 아끼고 사랑하게 된다. 사람들이 자연을 마구 훼손시키는 모습은 말세의 중요한 표식 중 하나지만 사람들이 생명을 아끼면서 사람답게 되는 모습은 만물이 회복될 중요한 표식 중 하나다.  또한 구원에는 ‘바른 길을 찾는 축복’도 포함되어 있고(8절), ‘기쁨과 즐거움을 얻는 축복’도 포함되어 있다(9-10절). 아름다운 유리그릇도 깨지면 칼날처럼 되어 남을 벤다. 죄로 인해 깨진 영혼이 되면 슬픔과 상처가 많아지지만 죄가 처리되어 깨진 영혼이 복원되면 기쁨과 즐거움이 넘치게 된다. 죄가 처리되는 축복을 어떻게 얻는가? 예수님을 영접할 때 얻는다. 결국 최후의 승자가 되는 가장 확실한 길은 예수님을 꼭 붙잡고 사는 길이다.  길이 많은 것이 반드시 좋은 것만은 아니다. 사막이나 광야는 갈 수 있는 길은 많아도 정작 어느 길로 가야 할지 혼란하게 만들 때가 많다. “길이 얼마나 많으냐?”보다 “길이 얼마나 바르냐?”가 중요하다. 인생은 윷말을 놓는 것과 같다. 지혜와 경험을 살려 최선을 다해 연구하고 말을 선택해 놓지만 그렇게 선택한 길로 가다가 잡힐 때도 많다. 가장 안전하고 바른 길은 지혜와 경험을 살리면서도 겸손하게 예수님을 꼭 붙잡고 하나님께 업혀 가는 길이다. ⓒ 이한규목사  http://www.john316.or.kr

Think about it: How has the Lord shown His love toward you today, this week, this month, and this year? Don’t just look for the spectacular. His love is seen in the ordinary, everyday circumstances of life. Then consider how He has shown His love toward your family, your church, and to others. Both the shepherds in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago and the sailors on board the United Fruit Company ships in 1906 heard an unexpected, surprising message of hope on a dark night. And God still speaks that same message of hope to us today. A Savior has been born for us—Christ the Lord!(Luke 2:11). We can join the choir of angels and believers through the ages who respond with “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests”(Luke 2:14). “Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me, Christ within me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me, Christ at my right, Christ at my left . . .” These hymn lyrics, written by the fifth-century Celtic Christian St. Patrick, echo in my mind when I read Matthew’s account of Jesus’s birth. They feel like a warm embrace, reminding me that I’m never alone. Matthew’s account tells us that God dwelling with His people is at the heart of Christmas. “그리스도가 나와 함께, 그리스도가 내 앞에, 그리스도가 내 뒤에, 그리스도가 내 안에, 그리스도가 내 아래에, 그리스도가 내 위에, 그리스도가 내 오른편에, 그리스도가 내 왼편에….” 마태복음에 있는 예수님 탄생에 대한 말씀을 읽다 보면 5세기 켈트 기독교인 성 패트릭이 쓴 이 찬송가 가사가 내 마음에 울립니다. 이 가사는 나를 따뜻하게 품어주는 것 같아서 내가 절대 혼자가 아니라는 사실을 상기시켜 줍니다.  마태복음은 하나님이 그의 백성들과 함께 거하시는 것이 성탄절의 본질이라고 말합니다. The twofold mystery of Christmas is that God became one of us so that we might become one with Him. Jesus suffered everything that was wrong so that we could be made right. That’s why the apostle Paul could write, “If anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone; the new is here! As Jacob fled from his brother Esau, he found himself in a strange and lonely place too. Asleep on the hard ground, he met God in a dream. 이 세상에 완벽하게 의로운 자는 없습니다. 당대의 의인이라고 일컬어지고 대 홍수에서 살아남은 유일한 가정의 가장인 노아도 홍수 후에 술 먹고 추태를 보이기도 했습니다. 그도 상대적인 의인일 뿐 절대적인 의인은 아니었습니다. 결국 의인이란 완벽한 사람이 아니라 주님의 십자가의 피를 믿고 죄를 용서받은 사람을 말합니다. 믿고 구원받았으면 구원 후에는 최선을 다해 의롭게 살려고 힘써야 합니다.  최대한 의롭게 살려고 하는 것을 율법적인 태도로 몰아가는 모습이 있습니다. 율법적인 태도란 의롭게 살지 않으면서 의롭게 사는 것처럼 보이는 것을 뜻합니다. 은혜로 구원받았지만 의롭게 살아야 합니다. 의로운 삶의 추구는 성도에게 필수적으로 있어야 합니다. 교회는 성공하지 못하고 돈을 벌지 못해도 의롭게 살려고 해야 한다고 가르쳐야 합니다. 정치가 강자의 이익을 대변하는 도구로 전락한 안타까운 현실 속에서 종교마저 그런 도구로 전락해서는 안 됩니다. 성공한 것이 존경받을 일이 아니라 바르게 성공한 것이 존경받을 일입니다. ⓒ 이한규목사  http://www.john316.or.kr

From the time God’s first image-bearers—Adam and Eve—wandered off in sin, He lamented the loss of fellowship with His people. He went to great lengths to restore the relationship by sending His one and only Son “to seek and to save the lost”(Luke 19:10). Gentleness is a willingness to accept limitations and ailments without taking out our aggravation on others. “The Lord helping me.” That’s the kind of mindset that kept Caleb battle-ready. He focused on God’s power, not his own, nor on his advanced age. God would help him do whatever needed to be done. In the apostle Paul’s New Testament letters, he also refused to take credit for his spiritual insight and influence. He knew he was like a spiritual father and mother to many who had put their faith in Christ. He admitted he had worked hard and suffered much to encourage the faith, hope, and love of so many(1 Cor. 15:10). But he could not, in good conscience, accept the applause of those who were inspired by his faith, love, and insight.   So for his readers’ sake, and for ours, Paul said, in effect, “It isn’t me, brothers and sisters. It’s Christ . . . Paul is nothing.” We are only messengers of the One who deserves our cheers. If anyone could have been anxious about unknowns and challenges, it would have been Paul. He was shipwrecked. He was beaten. He was jailed. In his letter to the Philippian church, he encouraged his friends who also were facing unknowns, telling them, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God”(Phil 4:6).   Paul’s words encourage me. Life is not without uncertainties-whether they come in the form of a major life transition, family issues, health scares, or financial trouble. What I continue to learn is that God cares. He invites us to let go of our fears of the unknown by giving them to Him. When we do, He, who knows all things, promises that His peace, “which transcends all understanding, will guard” our heart and mind in Christ Jesus(Phil 4:7). London’s Cafe Rendezvous has nice lighting, comfortable couches, and the smell of coffee in the air. What it doesn’t have are prices. Originally started as a business by a local church, the cafe was transformed a year after it started. The managers felt that God was calling them to do something radical-make everything on the menu free. Today you can order a coffee, cake, or sandwich without cost. There isn’t even a donation jar. It’s all a gift.   I asked the manager why they were so generous. “We’re just trying to treat people the way God treats us,” he said. “God gives to us whether we thank him or not. A guest band was leading praise and worship at our church, and their passion for the Lord was moving. We could see—and feel—their enthusiasm. In the fable of the chicken and the pig, the two animals discuss opening a restaurant together. As they plan their menu, the chicken suggests they serve ham and eggs. The pig swiftly objects saying, “No thanks. 'Wakeari' means “there is a reason” in Japanese. These products are not thrown away but are sold at a cheap price “for a reason”-for example, a crack in a rice cracker. My friend who lives in Japan tells me that wakeari is also a catchphrase for people who are obviously less than perfect.   Jesus loves all people-including the wakeari who society casts aside. When a woman who had lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at a Pharisee’s house, she went there and knelt behind Jesus at His feet, weeping(Luke 7:37-38). The Pharisee labeled her “a sinner”(Luke 7:39), but Jesus accepted her. He spoke gently to her, assuring her that her sins were forgiven(Luke 7:48).   Jesus loves imperfect, wakeari people-which includes you and me. Empathy is the power to understand and share the feelings of another. During a time of severe persecution against the followers of Jesus, the writer of Hebrews urged fellow believers to “continue to remember those in prison as if you were together with them in prison, and those who are mistreated as if you yourselves were suffering”(Hebrews 13:3). Sometimes, we feel unappreciated when our efforts don’t get recognized. Scripture, however, reminds us that God knows what we’re doing. He sees what others don’t. And it pleases Him when we serve for His sake-not for man’s praise.   Perhaps that’s why Jesus gave us an example by telling us to do our giving “in secret,” so that “your Father, who sees what is done . . . will reward you”(Matt. 6:4). We need not look to others for recognition and praise; we can take heart that God knows when we’re faithful in serving Him and others. Now consider this question: Why do we as humans pursue, pursue, pursue? Why must we climb unclimbed mountains, ski near-vertical slopes? Run the most difficult and dangerous rapids, challenge the forces of nature? Part of it is a desire for adventure and enjoyment, but it’s much more. It’s an instinct for God that has been implanted in us. We cannot not want to find God. We don’t know that, of course.
