< 과학을 부정하지 말라 >
지혜로운 자는 지식을 간직하거니와
미련한 자의 입은 멸망에 가까우니라 (잠언 10:14)
기독교는 지식이나 이성보다 믿음을 중시한다. 그래도 믿음과 은혜의 바탕 위에서 이성으로 추구할 것은 추구하라. 신앙과 과학은 반목 관계가 아니다. 과학은 사실의 설명에서 믿음보다 낫고 믿음은 사실의 수용에서 과학보다 낫다.
성경적인 지혜는 과학적인 한계를 넘어서지만 과학을 무시하지는 않는다. 과학의 문턱에 들어가면 과학 때문에 신앙을 버리고 과학에 깊이 들어가면 과학 때문에 신앙을 찾는다. 현대 과학이 풀 수 없는 수많은 신비를 보면서 과학의 한계를 깨닫고 믿음이 생기는 것이다.
천문학자치고 무신론자는 없다고 한다. 우주의 놀랍고 오묘하고 완전한 질서를 보면서 신의 존재를 인정하지 않을 수 없게 된 것이다. 과학과 신앙은 서로 존중해야 한다. 사람이 과학 발전을 통해 신비한 현상을 하나씩 밝혀내는 것은 하나님께 도전하는 교만한 태도가 아니다. 하나님이 치유의 은혜를 주신다고 해도 과학을 계속 발전시켜서 병을 하나씩 정복하는 것이 결코 교만한 태도가 아닌 것과 마찬가지다.
간혹 영계의 비밀에 정통했다는 이단 교주는 자기가 안수하면 성령의 불이 나가는데 왜 병원에 가느냐고 하며 과학적인 의료 행위를 멸시한다. 그런 거짓된 허풍쟁이로부터는 성령의 불이 더 안 나간다. 성경적인 치유는 과학을 부정하지 않는다. 성도에게는 ‘기도의 골방’과 ‘나눔의 사랑방’도 필요하지만 동시에 ‘지성과 과학을 개발시키는 글방과 연구방’도 필요하다.
하나님! 믿음을 가졌다고 해서 과학을 부정하지 않게 하시고
지혜롭고 은혜롭게 하나님이 주신 이성을 사용하게 하소서.
< Do not Deny Science >
Wise men store up knowledge,
but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. (Proverbs 10:14)
Christianity values faith over knowledge or reason. Nevertheless, pursue what you seek with reason on the basis of faith and grace. Faith and science are not antagonistic. Science is better than faith in the explanation of facts and faith is better than science in the acceptance of facts.
Biblical wisdom goes beyond scientific limits, but it does not ignore science. When you enter the threshold of science, you abandon faith because of science, and when you go deep into science, you seek faith because of science. Seeing the numerous mysteries that modern science cannot solve, you realize the limits of science and become a believer.
It is said that there are no atheists for astronomers. Looking at the amazing, mysterious, and perfect order of the universe, they were forced to acknowledge the existence of God. Science and faith must respect each other. It is not an arrogant attitude that challenges God for man to uncover mysterious phenomena one by one through scientific development. It is the same that it is not an arrogant attitude to continue to develop science and conquer diseases one by one even if God gives healing grace.
Sometimes, a heretic leader who claims to have mastered the secrets of the spirit world despises scientific medical practices, saying, "When I lay my hands on you, the fire of the Holy Spirit goes out. Why do you go to the hospital?" The fire of the Holy Spirit does not go out from such a false braggart. Biblical healing does not deny science. Believers need a small room of prayer and a love room of sharing, but at the same time, they need a writing room and a research room to develop intelligence and science.
God! Let me not deny science just because I have faith,
but let me use the God-given reason wisely and gracefully.
